Sustainability within Interior Design

When it comes to designing a sustainable interior, it's essential to consider the materials you use. Opting for fabrics made from natural fibres such as linen, cotton, and 100% wool is a wise choice. This is because man-made fabrics like cotton, nylon, polyester, or acrylic take a long time to biodegrade, and they don't decompose quickly.

Natural Materials

Linen, made from flax, is a great natural fiber to use in interiors. It's grown without the use of fertilisers and can be used in its entirety without the need for harsh chemicals in the production process. Moreover, it's a beautiful and eco-friendly choice that can add an elegant touch to any interior.

Repurposed Fabrics

Repurposed fabrics are also a good option for sustainable interior design. A bedspread can be transformed into cushions, or one can use fabrics acquired from a relative or at an antique store. We work closely with the client to repurpose or reuse these fabrics where possible, making it an eco-friendly and cost-effective choice.

Re-purposing Furniture

In a recent journal entry, I discussed the idea of mixing old and new elements in interior design. My advice to clients is that they don't necessarily have to start from scratch when decorating a new space. Instead, blending cherished pieces or antique furniture with new artwork or locally crafted pieces is not only environmentally friendly but also adds a personal, unique and beautiful touch to your living space.

Sustainable interiors

As a studio, we aim to take a long-term approach to environmental protection by considering not only the near-term impacts of the object or material we use but also selecting construction materials that offer low environmental impact, waste, and energy consumption. In each stage of the design process, we look for ways to reduce negative impacts and improve the quality of life without depleting natural resources. Our goal is to design for ‘Comfort, Function, Finish, Fun’ whilst also promoting sustainable interior design. Contact us today for help with your next interior design project!
